Bridge Watch Alarm System (BNWAS)
The Bridge Watch System is a digital simulation of a Bridge Navigational Watch Alarm System (BNWAS), designed specifically for the Wildlife Quest expedition vessel.
Why is it important?
On long voyages, especially during night watches or in calm conditions, there is a risk that the officer on watch may become fatigued or distracted, potentially compromising the safety of the ship, crew, and passengers.
The BNWAS is an IMO-mandated safety system on most commercial vessels. It continuously monitors the alertness of the watch officer and triggers escalating alarms if no activity is detected within a set time period. This tool helps maintain situational awareness and prevents accidents caused by human fatigue – a critical factor in maritime safety.
How does it work?
Select the desired watch interval (3–12 minutes) from the dropdown menu.
Press START to activate the system.
A countdown timer begins. The LED arc visually shows remaining minutes:
Green: safe zone
Yellow: 3–5 minutes remaining (caution)
Red: 1–2 minutes remaining (urgent)
The watch officer must press RESET regularly to confirm activity and restart the timer.
If no reset occurs, acoustic warnings are triggered (beep at 2 minutes, triple beep at 1 minute, continuous siren at 0).
The system can only be stopped by entering the correct 4-digit code. This code is known exclusively to the captain, ensuring that only authorized personnel can deactivate the watch alarm.
